Gas Safety Week 2025 - Day 4: Know your rights and responsibilities in rented properties

If you're a landlord or tenant, gas safety should be a priority.

Landlords are legally responsible for:

  • Annual gas safety checks
  • Maintaining pipework and appliances in safe condition
  • Providing tenants with a Gas Safety Record within 28 days of moving in
  • Ensuring working CO alarms are installed in habitable rooms with gas appliances (excluding cookers)

 Tenants should:

  • Ensure their landlord provides a current Gas Safety Record
  • Arrange safety checks for any appliances that they own
  • Check that any engineer who visits to carry out work is Gas Safe registered
