Gas Safety Week 2025 - Day 2: Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms – staying safe

Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and tasteless, which is why a CO alarm is a legal requirement in any home with fuel-burning appliances. It is also the responsibility and a legal requirement of landlords for rented properties.

Symptoms of CO poisoning include headaches, dizziness, breathlessness and nausea, and in extreme cases can lead to loss of consciousness.

HHIC supports efforts to increase public awareness on the importance of CO alarms in homes.  People in rented accommodation, including students, should ensure CO alarms are in place and working.  When travelling, consider taking a portable CO alarm with you – especially if staying in caravans, boats, hotels or apartments with gas appliances.

 Always:

  • Install CO alarms near gas appliances and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Choose alarms compliant with EN 50291 and displaying a Kitemark
  • Test alarms regularly as per the instructions

Legislation concerning CO alarms varies slightly in the different nations of the UK.  Read HHIC’s guide to the requirements of each country here: CO Detectors Variations Document April 2025
